THE CHARM OF CARTOONS

- Dr.Vijay Sekar KS
  Department of Mechanical Engineering

Cartoons have always played their part in my upbringing. In fact, those days, books and newspapers were the only source of enjoying cartoons. Later, Doordarshan started to air some comic stuff for kids. Newspapers used to post a daily cartoon with thoughts for the day or making a sarcastic political statement. In fact 'the common man' by eminent cartoonist RK Laxman was very popular with the morning readers. Cartoons were used by many artists to lampoon a politician or bring about an awareness of the social ills and issues plaguing the society. In fact a cartoon could capture the imagination of the masses more than an other media or method. The professionals not withstanding, each one of us in school would find joy in drawing caricatures of personalities in our art period. Gandhi or Vivekananda was relatively simpler to sketch given their obvious persona and style. But the fun quotient was more when sketching or imitating a Mickey or Donald.

The advent of satellite television saw a plethora of channels coming up drawing us closer to the popular cartoon movies such as Tom and Jerry, Mickey mouse etc. Not a day passes by without my son being glued to one of the umpteen cartoon channels on air today. Though I personally do not subscribe to becoming a couch potato, occasionally my son eggs me to watch a Tom and Jerry movie with him and before i have realized, i am hooked to the characters wondering what is Tom's next trick to trap Jerry and eagerly glued to see how the feisty Jerry tackles Tom.

I feel such characters bring out the child within us and more often than not take us back in time to the books which celebrated such characters. Cartoons have become a way of life today and will continue to bring a tear, smile, a laugh and a thought to those who would love to feel young at heart.

Long live the magic world of cartoons.Let the world feel lighter and younger both at heart and mind when drenched in the spell of a cartoon.

  1. Dear KSV, wonder how you could convey a message on cartoon without a cartoon. The way the words are styled out in your writeup is a cartoon of your skills. I agree that TV cartoons indeed bring out the child in us. It is so sad that we never think of the great lot of creativity of the cartoonist who brought a virtual reality in front of our eyes. Sometimes a whole lot of creative ideas could soar up from a cartoon movie. No doubt that a cartoon is a perfect and powerful mode of expressing views on any given subject! It is a boost for developing our creative skills. A good write up by Prof. KSV. Kudos rom NLN
